What a new moon actually is
Once every 29.5 days the moon lines up between Earth and the sun. Astronomers call this conjunction. The sunlit half faces the sun; the side turned toward us is dark, so the moon effectively vanishes for a night or two.
A new moon rises and sets with the sun, which is why you never see one at midnight. If the alignment is exact, the new moon crosses directly in front of the sun — that's a solar eclipse, which can only ever happen at new moon.
The spiritual meaning: a blank page
