How to read a moon calendar

A moon calendar shows the moon's phase for every day: the shape of each little disc above matches what you'll see in the sky that night, and the percentage is how much of the face is illuminated.

The two anchor points are marked in gold: the full moon (100 % lit, up all night) and the new moon (invisible, the darkest nights of the month). Between them the moon waxes for about 14.8 days and wanes for the same — one full cycle every 29.5 days.

Week numbers run down the left edge — useful for planning — and every date's phase is computed astronomically for your timezone, not copied from a generic table.

Moon calendars have guided people for millennia: farmers sowed by the waxing moon, fishermen read tides and bite by the phase, and many still plan haircuts, gardening and sleep around the cycle today. Whatever you believe, the rhythm is practical — a month with two clear anchors.

How accurate is this moon calendar?

Phase times are computed with the Meeus astronomical algorithms, accurate to within a few minutes, and shown for your local timezone.

Why does the percentage matter?

Illumination tells you how bright the night will be — 90 %+ washes out stargazing, while under 10 % gives the darkest skies of the month.
