What a full moon means
In the lunar cycle, the full moon is the halfway mark — everything begun at the new moon is now fully visible, for better or worse. That's why nearly every tradition reads it the same way: culmination, clarity, harvest, and release of whatever the cycle showed you is finished.
Astrologically the full moon is the sun and moon in opposite signs — a monthly tension between where you're headed and what you feel, which is why full moons have a reputation for big emotions.
Does the full moon affect sleep? (The honest answer)
Probably, a little. The best-known study, from the University of Basel (Current Biology, 2013), found participants around full moon took 5 minutes longer to fall asleep, slept about 20 minutes less, and showed 30% less deep sleep — in a windowless sleep lab, where moonlight couldn't be the cause.
Later studies split: some replicated the effect, several larger ones found nothing. The fair summary is that if the full moon affects your sleep, the effect is real but small — minutes, not hours. Bright moonlight through a window, on the other hand, measurably delays sleep in any phase.
Mood, "lunacy" and what the evidence says
The word lunatic comes from luna — the belief is ancient. Modern data is less romantic: large reviews find no reliable link between full moons and crime, hospital admissions, or psychiatric episodes. The pattern that does hold is confirmation bias — a strange night at full moon gets remembered; the same night a week later doesn't.
That doesn't make full-moon feelings imaginary. Slightly worse sleep plus a culturally loaded, very bright night sky is a real recipe for a heightened mood — just by ordinary mechanisms rather than mystical ones.
What to do at a full moon
Traditions treat the full moon as review-and-release: look at what you set in motion at the new moon, keep what worked, and consciously drop what didn't. Practical forms include a short journal entry, a walk under the moon, or the full-moon version of moon rituals.
The next full moon is Friday, 28 August 2026 — every date and exact time for the year is in full moons of 2026.
Does a full moon really affect sleep?
Small studies, including Basel 2013 in a controlled lab, found around 20 minutes less sleep and reduced deep sleep near full moon. Larger studies are mixed. If there is an effect, it is minutes, not hours.
Why do I feel restless at the full moon?
A mix of slightly lighter sleep, a much brighter night sky, and expectation. No mystical mechanism is needed for the feeling to be real.
Does the full moon influence behaviour or crime?
Large reviews find no reliable link between full moons and crime rates, ER visits, or psychiatric admissions. The persistent belief is best explained by confirmation bias.
How often is there a full moon?
Every 29.5 days. Most years have 12; some have 13, which is when a "blue moon" — a second full moon in one calendar month — can occur.
