Why it's called the Pink Moon
April's full moon is the Pink Moon — and no, the moon itself doesn't turn pink. The name comes from creeping phlox, or "moss pink", one of the earliest and most vivid wildflowers of North American spring, carpeting the ground around the time this moon rises.

Any low-hanging full moon can look golden or reddish near the horizon — that's the atmosphere filtering blue light, not the Pink Moon being pink. In most years the Pink Moon is also the Paschal Moon that fixes the date of Easter.
