The 8 moon phases

The moon moves through eight phases in a cycle of about 29.5 days. What each one looks like and means.

New moon

The sky goes dark tonight. A quiet start — good for setting intentions.

Nothing to see — the moon stands between Earth and the sun, lit side turned away. Rises and sets with the sun; in the sky all day, absent all night. The month's darkest nights and the best stargazing.

Waxing crescent

A thin sliver returns to the evening sky, growing a little each night.

A thin sliver on the moon's right side (as seen from the northern hemisphere), growing each night. Visible low in the west just after sunset, setting in the early evening. Often accompanied by earthshine on the dark part.

First visible progress — the phase of tending fresh starts before they can stand on their own.

First quarter

Half lit and climbing. The moon rises around midday and sets near midnight.

Exactly half lit — the right half bright, the terminator a straight line down the middle. Rises around midday, highest at sunset, sets near midnight. The evening sky's most convenient moon.

The first checkpoint: momentum meets its first resistance, and traditions call for decisions rather than doubts.

Waxing gibbous

Nearly full and bright most of the night.

More than half lit, swelling toward full; the left edge still softly shadowed. Rises in the afternoon and stays up most of the night — bright enough to cast shadows.

Refinement: the goal is visible, not yet reached. Adjust and persist rather than start anew.

Full moon

The moon rises at sunset and stays up all night.

The entire disc lit. Around the horizon it glows amber; overhead it turns hard white. Rises at sunset, up all night, sets at sunrise — the only phase that owns the whole night.

Culmination and release: what the cycle grew is now fully visible, and traditions review and let go.

Waning gibbous

Still bright, rising later each evening. Many people sleep lighter this week.

Still mostly lit but shrinking from the right; the "lopsided" moon of late evenings. Rises after sunset — later each night — and lingers into the morning sky.

Gratitude and distribution: harvest is in, and the tradition is sharing what the cycle produced.

Last quarter

Half lit and fading, high in the sky at dawn.

Half lit again — now the left half. The mirror image of first quarter. Rises around midnight, highest at dawn, visible in the morning sky until midday.

Honest clearing: release what the cycle showed isn't working, before the next one begins.

Waning crescent

A thinning sliver in the morning sky. The cycle is almost done.

A thinning sliver on the left, shrinking toward invisibility, often with earthshine. Rises in the small hours, hangs low in the east at dawn — the "morning moon".

Rest and emptying: the cycle's exhale. Traditions treat these days as recovery, not production.

How long is a moon cycle?

A full lunar cycle — new moon to new moon — takes 29.53 days on average: the synodic month. It's slightly longer than the moon's actual orbit (27.3 days) because Earth moves too; the moon needs two extra days to catch up to the same position relative to the sun.

The cycle splits into two halves: about 14.8 days of waxing (growing light, moon visible in the evening) and 14.8 days of waning (shrinking light, moon visible toward morning). Each of the eight phases below lasts roughly 3.7 days.

Why does the moon have phases?

The moon makes no light of its own — we only ever see the half the sun happens to be lighting. As the moon orbits Earth, our viewing angle on that lit half changes: sometimes we face it fully (full moon), sometimes it faces away entirely (new moon), and everything between is a phase.

A common misconception: phases are not Earth's shadow on the moon. Earth's shadow only touches the moon during a lunar eclipse, a few times a year. Ordinary phases are pure geometry — sun, moon and your line of sight.

How long does each moon phase last?

The four named events (new, first quarter, full, last quarter) are instants; the eight phases as periods each span about 3.7 days of the 29.5-day cycle.

Are moon phases the same everywhere on Earth?

Yes — the whole planet sees the same phase on the same date. Southern-hemisphere observers see it flipped left-right, and the local time of moonrise differs.

Is the moon ever completely dark?

At new moon the side facing us receives no direct sunlight, but faint "earthshine" — sunlight reflected off Earth — often makes the dark disc dimly visible around the young crescent.
